The rise in energy costs, the progressive shift from monopoly conditions to a free market situation and environmental problems (climate change, atmospheric pollution, risk of accidents, radioactive waste) of a centralised production system based on the utilisation of non-renewable resources from abroad call for the development of scalable and more efficient energy systems.
In addition to the utilisation of local resources, specific focus should be placed on putting decentralised production systems on the grid. These systems can vary in scale from a residential building or industrial centre, all the way up to a city neighbourhood or even an urban conglomerate.
The aim is basically to develop energy hubs in which various carriers contribute to the production of electrical and thermal energy, where the energy transformed is utilised as much as possible, while also considering the local features (industrial activity, construction typology, etc.).
