Francesco Origgi is a veterinary microbiologist and pathologist who graduated in veterinary medicine from the State University of Milan in 1994. In 2001 he obtained a PhD in veterinary medicine from the Graduate School of the University of Florida. After a stint at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where he worked in molecular virology, in 2006 he was admitted to the graduate program in animal pathology at the University of Florida.  
In 2010, he began a long and fruitful collaboration with the University of Bern (Vetsuisse), where he was head of diagnostics at the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health, co-founder with Professor Joachim Frey of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology's Examination Candidate Admission Training Program, and, most recently, liaison for exotic and zoo animal pathology at the Institute of Animal Pathology. 
Since 2016, he has been Privatdozent at the University of Bern. 
Since January 2023 Francesco Origgi has been full professor at the Infectious Diseases Unit of the Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Messina. Author of more than one hundred publications, he is, in addition, a member of the Herpesvirales study group, editor for international scientific journals and winner of international awards.

Prof. Origgi said he wants to contribute to making the Institute of Microbiology "more and more a model for microbiological research at the regional, national and international level, having as its natural perimeter and mission that of "one health" (health and well-being of humans, animals and the environment are closely interconnected), so that it is increasingly structured as an interdisciplinary center where life sciences and technology come together to shape the future." 

The SUPSI management would like to thank Mauro Tonolla, the current Director of the Institute of Microbiology, for the quality of the scientific project he and his team have pursued for years and which represents an enviable foundation of solidity and potential on which to continue to write the institute's future.

The Institute of Microbiology
It is the reference center for microbiology south of the Alps. Its unified vision considers human, animal and environmental health as a whole in a broader concept of "one health." As part of its mission, the Microbiology Institute carries out its activities in research, service delivery and training. It actively cooperates with Swiss and foreign academic institutions and intends to consolidate and expand the network of collaborations within SUPSI and with other entities outside and inside Canton Ticino.
