The increasingly strong combination of new technologies and clinical research leads to the development of new ways of diagnosis, treatment and prevention. New digital technologies enable remote monitoring of patients, personalization of therapy, or the design of customized prostheses. The enormous amount of medical data produced by the industry's digital revolution also makes it possible to develop highly personalized treatments and diagnoses.
But where are we in this revolution? What are the future opportunities? And what are the challenges for clinical research, technology, policy and industry?
To answer these questions, the Innovative Technologies Department organized the event “Technology and Health: Challenges and Opportunities between Clinic, Research and Industry” with the intention of bringing together professionals active in MedTech in academia, clinic and industry.
The conference opened with an institutional address by Prof. Dr. Milena Properzi, Director of the Department of Innovative Technologies, who presented the numerous research projects in the MedTech field active at the Department's various research institutes.
The floor was then passed to Prof. Luca Crivelli, Director of the Department of Business, Health and Social Economics, who proposed a speech on the topic of health policy.
Also from the academic point of view, Prof. Paolo Bonato, of the Harvard University Medical School, on the topic of change in the health sector and future opportunities for innovation, and Dr. Marcello Ienca, Group Leader of the Intelligent System Ethics School (EPFL), on the controversial relationship between ethics and data.
Ing. Francesco Siccardi, CEO of Medacta Internation instead offered a report on industry responses to new needs in the field of MedTech and digitization.
The second part of the evening was taken up by the panel discussion “Challenges and Opportunities between Clinic, Research and Industry,” which featured Ing. Siccardi and Dr. Ienca together with Prof. Dr. Emanuele Carpanzano, SUPSI Director of Research, Development and Knowledge Transfer, and Prof. Dr. Alessandro Ceschi, Clinical Trial Unit Director EOC.
