Prof. Alessandro Facchini, PhD
Professor Alessandro Facchini holds a Licentiate in Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Neuchâtel (2003), a DEA in Logic and Foundations of Mathematics from the University of Barcelona (2006), and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Bordeaux in co-tutorship with the University of Lausanne (2010). In 2011, he was awarded the Paul Bernays Award, granted to a "young researcher for an outstanding contribution in the field of logic and philosophy of science." In 2023, he completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Teaching at SUPSI.
Alongside his studies, he began his academic career as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Logic of the University of Neuchâtel (2002-2007) and later at the Centre Romand for Logic, Philosophy, and History of Science of the University of Lausanne (2005-2007). From 2007 to 2010, he worked at the Institute of Information Systems of the University of Lausanne as an Assistant and SNFS Scientific Collaborator. In 2010, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (UC Santa Cruz) and, in 2011, an SNFS Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Informatics of the University of Amsterdam (2011-2012) and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw (2012-2014). Since 2015, he has been working at SUPSI at the IDSIA Institute, initially as a PhD Researcher and subsequently as a Senior Lecturer-Researcher in 2021. Prof. Facchini assumed his role as Associate Professor and Co-Head of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence as of 1 January 2025
Matteo Casserini, PhD
Dr. Matteo Casserini completed his studies at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, obtaining a Diploma in Mathematics (2007) and a PhD in Mathematics (2011) from ETH Zurich. In 2016, he completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Computer Science, also at ETH Zurich.
Alongside his academic journey, Dr Casserini began his professional journey as a Research Assistant in the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich (2007-2011). He subsequently worked as a Senior Quantitative Analyst at the banking institution Credit Suisse (2011-2015), followed by a role as Senior Data Scientist at the fintech company Centralway Numbrs (2015-2017). He then took on a similar position at the Swiss e-commerce platform Siroop (2017-2018). Since 2018, and prior to joining SUPSI, he held the role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Tech Lead and Architect at Oracle Software in Zurich. In this role, Dr Casserini led several international applied research teams in developing technologies across fields such as Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. Dr Casserini will take on the role of Co-Head of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence as of 1 February 2025.
