The development of the video game industry and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies is not only changing the world of entertainment, but is impacting other fields such as education, medicine, and marketing. Serious games and game-based technologies are increasingly being used to facilitate learning processes and to support therapeutic measures.
“Virtual and augmented reality have the potential to create immersive and interactive experiences that go far beyond traditional applications,” emphasizes Professor Tobias Häberlein, Head of the Department of Computer Science at Fernfachhochschule Schweiz.
Diverse career prospects
The new nine-semester Bachelor's degree combines theoretical principles with practice-oriented projects, with an approach that aims to impart technical and interdisciplinary skills. Within this new coursework, programming, game design and VR/AR technologies will be addressed. “With this approach, we want to prepare students for the demands of the labor market, giving them the opportunity to specialize in a dynamic and future-oriented field,” Häberlein continues.
Career prospects are varied. These profiles are not only in demand in the video game industry, but also in medical technology development, health care, defense, construction, education, and the film and animation industry.
Ethics at the center
The development of video games and virtual reality environments not only offers numerous opportunities, but also harbors potential risks and confronts those in the industry with ethical challenges and responsibilities. “This is why we have integrated a specific ethics module into the training. An aspect that is also taken into account in the rest of the training,” concludes Häberlein.
Like all training offered by the FFHS, the Bachelor in Game and VR Development is offered in blended learning and part-time mode. Eighty percent of the training is self-directed, while the remaining 20 percent of the course will be offered at the FFHS campus in Zurich.
The new training will start in August 2025. Applications for admission are due by May 31, 2025.
