The Management of the Department of Business Economics, Health, and Social Care (DEASS) has appointed Marco Barbero as the new Head of Research and Services. In his new role, he will also become a member of the DEASS Management, taking over from Gian Luca Di Tanna, Full Professor of Biostatistics and Health Economics.
Marco Barbero graduated in Physiotherapy from the University of Milan and then specialized in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders at the University of Genoa in 2005. In 2016, he obtained a PhD from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, focusing on myofascial trigger points.
He is currently Full Professor of Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and Co-Chair of the DEASS Faculty Board. Since 2014, he has been head of the Rehabilitation Research Laboratory (2rLab), where he has successfully developed several lines of research at national and international level. He is also the author of several scientific articles in international journals and, since 2022, has been active in basic training as Co-Head of the Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy.
Starting December 1, 2025, Marco Barbero will take on the new role of Head of Research and Services at DEASS on an interim basis, leaving his co-responsibility for the Bachelor's degree program in Physiotherapy. With his experience and expertise, he will be able to make a valuable contribution to the achievement of DEASS's strategic objectives, starting with the departmental research audit required by the quality assurance system in 2026. Barbero will also represent DEASS in the SUPSI Research Commission, where he will contribute to the development of institutional strategic dossiers in line with the SUPSI Strategy 2025-2028.
The DEASS Management congratulates Marco Barbero on his prestigious appointment and thanks Gian Luca Di Tanna for his important contribution to the leadership of DEASS research, as evidenced by the acquisition of numerous significant grants in a highly competitive environment such as that of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
