Since childhood, Mattia, 21 years old, has loved numbers and constructions, inspired by his father, an engineer. He is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at SUPSI, and for him, a bridge or a tunnel is not just a physical or architectural structure, but a work that meets specific functional, technological, and even social needs.
Why did you choose the SUPSI Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering?
I followed a very linear educational path. As a child, I watched my father, an engineer, and enjoyed playing with construction, putting together coloured pieces to create houses and fantasy objects. My passion for scientific subjects led me to graduate from a technical institute, and later I felt the need to deepen my knowledge and acquire specialized skills. The choice to continue my studies in civil engineering was natural and in line with my passions. The SUPSI Bachelor's degree appealed to me because of its highly practical approach, able to effectively integrate theory and concrete application. Although challenging, I find it extremely stimulating and educational, as it provides a solid preparation for the challenges of the future. I am confident that this course will enable me to deal with the complex situations I will encounter in my career with confidence and competence.
Is there a moment during your studies at SUPSI that has left a positive impression on you and that you would like to share?
Rather than a single episode, what has positively marked my time at SUPSI has been a constant feeling: the awareness of being in a stimulating and collaborative environment. This atmosphere has deepened my interest in projects that tangibly improve people's lives. I’m particularly passionate about contributing to the creation of essential infrastructure—such as hospitals, bridges, or tunnels—that combine functionality, safety, and social impact. The belief that I can make a real difference to collective well-being through engineering is a powerful source of motivation for me.
What do you appreciate about the practical experience you are gaining?
Definitely the direct contact with professors and professionals. Visits to major construction sites, such as the new sports arena in Lugano, the Vedeggio-Cassarate tunnel and the pedestrian walkway at the Basel train station, have allowed me to meet designers, material suppliers and other key figures in the professional world. These are unique experiences that bring what you learn in the classroom to life.
Another aspect that I consider extremely valuable is the collaboration with my fellow students on project work. Working in a group has taught me to recognize and value other people's skills. When I encounter a difficulty, I look for someone who has more experience in that area and together we find solutions. This spirit of sharing makes learning deeper and more enriching.
What are your plans after completing your Bachelor's degree?
I will probably continue my studies with the Master of Science in Engineering – Civil Engineering at SUPSI. Of course, if an exciting job opportunity at an engineering firm were to arise, I would choose the part-time mode so that I can balance professional work with my studies.
