The negotiations, conducted by the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL) on behalf of swissuniversities and Swiss higher education institutions, including SUPSI, have not resulted in an agreement that meets the requirements of the negotiating mandate. As a result, from 1 January 2026, we will be faced with a no-deal scenario. Efforts to reach a joint solution with the publisher will continue in the coming year.
The “no-deal” situation will affect the entire Springer Nature journal portfolio, both for reading and publishing.
In line with the recommendations of swissuniversities, SUPSI Libraries recommend the following:
- Access to articles for reading
Content published from 1 January 2026 will not be available, with the exception of Open Access publications.
Access to previous content will be possible thanks to subscriptions taken out by the Libraries in the past.
To access articles that are not accessible, researchers can explore the alternative routes indicated in the factsheet ‘How to get the article?’.
- Publication – hybrid portfolio and Gold Open Access portfolio
Researchers will be able to continue publishing in hybrid journals at no additional cost, but articles will not be made available in Open Access.
SUPSI will not pay the publication costs (Article Processing Charges - APC) for hybrid articles and advises researchers not to pay these APCs with their own funds.
To make a publication Open Access, it will be possible to self-archive the accepted version of the article, after an embargo period (6 or 12 months depending on the journal), in the institutional repository ARIS.
In the meantime, please contact us (licenzeoa@supsi.ch) as soon as you consider publishing in a Springer Nature journal to learn more about the alternatives available.
