The Institute
The Institute of Microbiology (IM) is the reference center for microbiology in the Swiss territory southern from the Alps. It integrates public health, environmental hygiene, microbial ecology, and biotechnology within a "One Health" framework. The institute has two main facilities, one in Mendrisio and the other in Bellinzona. The laboratories carry out research projects and provide services in biosafety, vector control, microbial ecology, and environmental biotechnology. IM collaborates with the Canton of Ticino, the Center for Alpine Biology, the Foundation Bolle di Magadino and other partners, continuously enhancing its expertise through research and contributing to education through academic projects and courses in partnership with local organizations and universities.

Biological events such as pandemics, epizootics, or bioterrorist attacks may have a significant impact on public health, society, and financial systems. We collaborate with cantonal, federal, and national reference centers to develop protocols and conduct rapid analyses of highly pathogenic agents.
The tiger mosquito
Originally from Southeast Asia, this insect has now colonized much of the world and is considered one of the most threatening invasive species. Besides being particularly bothersome due to its frequent bites, it acts as a generalist vector for mosquito-borne viruses that can cause severe diseases in humans. However, effective measures can be implemented to reduce its presence and the associated risks.

The Institute of Microbiology at SUPSI employs around 50 highly qualified staff members and is particularly active in serving the community, education, and research, with over 100 scientific articles published and more than 90 competitive research projects acquired in the last 5 years.
