In the knowledge society, the ever-increasing speed of scientific progress and the growing need of citizens to make informed choices on emerging issues impose a constant renewal of communicative devices to foster the understanding and implementation of scientific knowledge, the dialogue between science and society, as well as communication between experts.
In the field of science communication, design plays a critical role in giving shape and meaning to change through decoding processes and the construction of metalanguages that enable a communicative quality of scientific works and an effective diffusion of scientific knowledge in its various declinations and in relation to the different audiences it addresses.
The Design for Science area, on behalf of or in collaboration with research institutes, public institutions and private organizations, develops applied research projects in the following research areas:

- Strategic design: the development of strategies and formats for scientific communication and mediation.
- Knowledge visualization: the visual representation of complex information using design principles, graphics, storytelling, etc.; applied in all areas of society (science, health, education, etc.).
- Exhibition design: the design of engaging exhibition environments and spaces for scientific dissemination intended for exhibitions, displays, museums and other places where information and products are presented to the public.
- Citizen science: the promotion of citizen involvement and/or participation in applied research projects by assigning an active role in the generation of knowledge.
