from 16:00 to 17:00
The spread of the tiger mosquito, in addition to causing daily nuisance, is also significant in terms of public health because it can act as a vector for various pathogens, including diseases such as dengue and Zika; this risk is directly linked to ongoing climate change and the resulting increase in increasingly prolonged periods of hot weather.
It is therefore not surprising that a range of skills is required to address the issue in an informed and comprehensive manner, from scientific knowledge and land management to individual behaviour.
During the round table discussion featuring experts from the fields of healthcare, biology and education, the new book La zanzara tigre vola a scuola. Prevenire insieme con scuola e territorio in corresponsabilità will be presented; it forms part of the Quaderni didattici series published by the DFA/ASP. The publication proposes science education programmes based on the case of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), used as an authentic context to explore themes of ecology, public health and scientific citizenship in the Canton of Ticino. A resource designed to offer teachers and pupils a scientifically sound, clear and practical tool for addressing a real, complex and highly topical issue.
Free hardback copies of the book will be distributed during the event.
The following will participate in the round table:
- Franco Gervasoni, Director General of SUPSI
- Eleonora Flacio, Senior Researcher, Institute of Microbiology, SUPSI
- Sascha Gregori, Researcher and expert on invasive alien species at the Graubünden Office for Nature and the Environment
- Francesco Origgi, Full Professor of Infectious Diseases, SUPSI Institute of Microbiology
- Stefano Peduzzi, Lecturer in Natural Science Education, SUPSI-DFA/ASP
An aperitif will be served afterwards.
