Equal Opportunities - Linguistic Equality
SUPSI promotes communication that is attentive to differences and supports the use of language that is respectful and non-discriminatory of all persons regardless of gender identity, age, origin, disability, religious affiliation, etc.
Language is predominant in the construction of representations of the person and today it is more important than ever that it reflects reality objectively, so that people can feel fairly represented.
It is not immutable: it evolves with time and reflects our values and the organisation of society. In addition, it conveys messages and should therefore be used consciously and correctly.
Using a language that is attentive to differences means giving a clear signal that all professions and all functions can be exercised and held regardless of gender, and whenever reference is made to persons with disabilities, subject to the specific terminology of the sector (medical, insurance, etc.), it is appropriate to put the subject before the disability itself, trying to avoid the generalised use of concepts that are now abused, and in any case delicate, such as 'differently-abled' or 'handicapped'.
SUPSI, aware of the dynamic nature of language, carefully monitors linguistic progress with a view to grammatically inclusive, effective and representative solutions for all persons.
