The congress, which is held every two years, provides a platform for discussion between research and practice on the latest developments in natural hazard prevention. The theme of the 2024 edition, held from 10 to 13 June at the Vienna Hofburg Conference Centre, was Natural hazards in a changing climate. How to manage them?
SUPSI’s Department of Environment Constructions and Design was also present. In particular, Alessandro De Pedrini, a doctoral student at SUPSI and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and Christian Ambrosi, director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, contributed a study on the Cadegliano Viconago landslide, showing various collapse and cross-border risk management scenarios.
Global warming and its impact on natural disasters are among the major challenges of our era. Traditional concepts of risk prevention and disaster management are no longer sufficient in the context of climate change, which imposes adaptation processes with more efficient protection systems. In this sense, Alessandro De Pedrini’s presentation on the Cadegliano Viconago landslide (selected from over 50 papers) was particularly relevant, showing a virtuous example of cross-border management of natural hazards through the use of state-of-the-art warning systems to respond to the challenge induced by climate change.
