Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) refers to the production of calcium carbonate mediated by microbial activity. Some microorganisms possess enzymatic systems able to promote and accelerate the precipitation of calcium carbonate at a microscopic level, a process that would otherwise occur very slowly through purely chemical and physical reactions. This area of research focuses on harnessing this metabolic capability for the built environment, such as soil stabilization and the reinforcement of anthropogenic structures.
