SUPSInido (Day Nursery)
Through collaboration with educational departments and local institutions, the service also aims to participate in the development and supervision of educational quality and a regional nursery culture.
The Day Nursery coordinates the SUPSI nursery centres (SUPSInido Manno, USI SUPSInido Viganello and SUPSInido Locarno). These are designed for children aged 4 months to 3-4 years and are aimed primarily at SUPSI and USI-SUPSI families, but are also available to external families living in the area.
All the Day Nursery locations have limited places, so enrolment is subject to availability. Priority access is given to SUPSI and USI staff and students over external users, subject to the capacity and organisational capabilities of the facilities.
In step with the times, these places provide an important foundation to the educational journey, not limiting themselves to the concept of care but accompanying children in their growth and supporting parents in their parenting.
The experience of the Day Nursery is adapted to the specific needs of all SUPSInido and USI SUPSInido centres and their young members, with corresponding educational principles and pedagogical foundations. Each site has a head teacher and an educational team, as well as trainee educational staff (apprentices and interns) and auxiliary staff (kitchen help). The service provides pedagogical and administrative supervision of all the centres.
The educational practice is inspired by carefully selected pedagogical theories. The theoretical principles of Pikler, Gordon, Malaguzzi, Montessori, and others, are transmitted and discussed during the frequent training sessions (external and internal) of the educational team, to be coherently and flexibly adapted to the particularities of each child, subgroup and centre.

Particular attention is paid to the child's settling into the nursery. Attendance is preceded by this fundamental period, which allows the child to gradually settle in and the parents to get to know the educational team, the pedagogical approach and the organisation of the nursery. This period is also essential for the teachers in order to lay the foundations for the indispensable collaboration with the families for the child’s benefit. Parents are asked to be willing to make this delicate transition, attending the nursery together with their child, in one-hour meetings, over a period of about 15 days, during which the moment of separation is dealt with together with an educator.

The day at the nursery begins with welcoming the child and the parent into the group. After the greeting, the child can choose the game that interests him or her most and thus begin the day.
The start of the day is a delicate moment in which the emotions of all three parties (child, parent, educator) are recognised and considered.
09.15: Snack break
When all the children have arrived at the nursery, a small snack of seasonal fresh fruit is served at the table. Like all nursery meals, it represents an important moment of socialising and dialogue in which the children interact with each other and with the educator, exchanging their first glances, greeting each other and the older children telling their stories.
09.30 -11.30: Play and activities
Each child has their own pace, preferences and habits, even in play. During the morning the key word for the educators is "observe". The team observes the group, allowing space and freedom to those who choose a game on their own, respectively accompanying and stimulating those who have not yet organised themselves spontaneously. Children may also be offered activities or thematic paths to promote their emerging skills.
11.30 -12.30: Lunch
Lunch is a very important aspect of the educational project: it satisfies a need and is also an opportunity for the child to interact with adults and peers. It is an ideal moment to encourage the process of socialisation and language through relationships, respect for time and rules and interaction.
The task of the educators is to support the children's autonomy and gradually promote the pleasure of 'doing it yourself'.
12.30 - 13.00: Reuniting and preparing for rest
After lunch there are the first outings for the children who attend half-day.
Those attending the full day are accompanied to the preparations for afternoon nap.
13.00 - 14.45: Rest time
Rest time is an important time for children to recharge their batteries so that they can better face the rest of the day. Respecting the needs of each child, even children who do not fall asleep have the opportunity to take advantage of a quiet moment to spend in their own bed or through quiet activities.
15.30: Snack break
The snack, like every meal, is a time for sharing and an opportunity to consolidate relationships, rules and communication between group mates.
Fresh seasonal fruit and/or other foods are always offered as snacks, in keeping with a healthy, balanced diet.
15.00 - 18.15: Activities and reunion
Games and activities consequently punctuate the children's afternoon until their parents arrive. Reuniting after a day at the nursery with one's parent is, like parting, a very delicate and emotional moment. The parent is told about the child's day at the nursery and great care and attention is paid to the reunion.

The site, authorised to accommodate a maximum of 30 children per day, is located in the Stabile Suglio, on the 2nd floor. The nursery is organised in three areas for the different age groups (roughly 4-12 months, 1-2 years, 2/3-4 years).
In addition to the areas for each group, there is a movement space and an outdoor garden.
The context in which the crèche is located, i.e. in close proximity to the Department of Business Economics, Health and Social Care, favours the development of collaborative projects with students in the Social Area of both Basic and Continuing Education.

The USI SUPSInido Viganello service, which opened in January 2021, is located within the Lugano university hub on the USI SUPSI East Campus in Lugano-Viganello. The nursery is accessible primarily to SUPSI and USI families.
The nursery is organised in an "open space" and the areas of each subgroup are delimited by furniture.
The subgroups are divided by age group (4-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-3/4 years). In addition to the areas for each group, there is an exercise area, a large indoor square and an outdoor area.
