Competence Centre for the Teaching and Learning of Italian as a Language of Schooling (DILS)

Its activities include research and basic and continuous training in the teaching of Italian in the Canton of Ticino, with a focus on compulsory schooling.

SLDs and language

Every student has a different way of learning: research has a duty to find ways to meet their needs.

Italian and mathematics

Must the teaching of subjects at school necessarily proceed along parallel tracks? The joint study of Italian and mathematics shows that this is not the case at all.

Written composition and its teaching

How do pupils write at school? Studying their texts is the first step towards identifying effective and stimulating teaching strategies.

Children's literature

From illustrated books to contemporary fiction, including children's classics: literary works play a key role in schools.

Reading aloud

The value of stories: exposing pupils to reading aloud develops a range of life skills.

Ludolinguistics

Is playing with words just a fun pastime? Not at all! It is an effective way to learn Italian as a first or second language.

Reflections on language

From spontaneous to conscious use of language: activating metalinguistic reflection is the best way to discover grammar.

Reading and comprehension

It is not enough to decipher the written code to understand a text: investigating pupils' reading skills and comprehension processes is the only way to give them support and assistance.

Entering the culture of written language

A field of research that is still partly undiscovered: learning to read and write is one of the most difficult challenges the human brain has to face.

Today's Italian

What are the characteristics of today's Italian, both in general and in the context of the Canton of Ticino? Studying and describing them is essential for guiding teaching activities.

Italian as the language of schooling

In our context, Italian is the language of communication and transmission of all knowledge. Reflection on this role is essential for more informed teaching in all subjects.
