Promoting historical knowledge as fundamental and necessary knowledge for understanding today's world, in order to foster the development of an active citizenship aware of the challenges of the present.
The teaching of history didactics, heritage education, civic education, democracy and citizenship, and gender education fulfil these important aims, both in basic and initial teacher training and in continuing education.

The Area of history and civics teaching is mainly active in the Bachelor's degree programme in Pre-school Teaching and the Bachelor's degree programme in Primary School Teaching, where it deals with history teaching in the modules relating to the environment dimension and offers in-depth studies on heritage and gender education in the complementary options in the third year.
In the Master's programme in Teaching for Secondary I level, there are classes in the teaching of history and civic, citizenship and democracy education and, in co-teaching, the disciplinary didactics workshop.
In the teaching diploma for secondary schools, the history teaching course and the disciplinary teaching workshop are offered when the history teaching qualification is activated.
Within the framework of Continuing Education, there are occasionally courses offered for teachers of different school levels.

In the 2018/2019 school year, in cooperation with the Spitzer Foundation and the Historical Archive of the City of Lugano, the digital learning platform Le vite dei Giusti was created.
