Institute of Applied Sustainability to the Built Environment (ISAAC)

The Institute of Applied Sustainability to the Built Environment (ISAAC) promotes the energy transition towards a zero-emission society based on an inter- and transdisciplinary approach in the areas of characterisation and reliability of photovoltaics and their integration in the building, intelligent management of renewable energy in the grid, energy efficiency of buildings and their maintenance. The complex energy transition also includes the proposal of more sustainable choices and lifestyles, involving local and civil society stakeholders.

This page brings together some relevant information and presents it in a concise manner. Detailed information about the Institute of Applied Sustainability to the Built Environment is available by visiting the Institute's website.

Disciplinary fields

SUPSI Icon

Photovoltaics

Switzerland's only ISO 170125 accredited laboratory supports the photovoltaic industry by developing new testing and characterisation methods to establish the efficiency, durability and reliability of photovoltaic modules.

SUPSI Icon

Energy systems

Analyses and optimises advanced energy systems integrating renewable energy production and studies changes due to technological, economic and social factors supporting the energy transition.

SUPSI Icon

Building system

Deals with the analysis, management and sustainable development of real estate in a circular building vision and considering the integration of photovoltaics as an architectural and renewable energy production element.

SUPSI Icon

Energy, sustainability and territory

Promotes energy efficiency and sustainable transition through the development of local and regional policies with the involvement of users and all actors involved in the transition.
The institute includes the photovoltaic laboratory and two competence centres:

Research activities are developed in the fields of renewable energies, in particular photovoltaics and geothermal energy, analysis of building degradation and energy efficiency, environmental studies and energy policies.

The Institute of Applied Sustainability to the Built Environment offers services in the fields of renewable energies, rational use of energy, energy efficiency, including the renovation and maintenance of buildings, regional and local energy planning based on environmental, economic and social criteria.
